How to Calculate Gold Resale Value?

Gold resale value is the estimated amount you may receive when you sell your gold jewellery to a jeweller or gold buyer. The value primarily depends on the current gold price, purity, net gold weight and the deduction applied by the buyer.

When calculating the resale value of jewellery, the weight of diamonds, stones and other non-gold materials should generally be separated from the gross jewellery weight. The remaining weight represents the approximate net gold weight used for the calculation.

Gold Resale Value Formula

Step 1: Calculate Net Gold Weight Net Gold Weight = Gross Jewellery Weight − Stone / Non-Gold Weight Step 2: Calculate Purity-Adjusted Gold Rate Purity-Adjusted Rate = 24K Gold Rate per gram × Purity Step 3: Calculate Gold Value Gold Value = Net Gold Weight × Purity-Adjusted Rate Step 4: Apply Resale Deduction Resale Value = Gold Value − Jeweller Deduction

What Affects the Resale Value of Gold Jewellery?

1. Current Gold Price

The current market price of gold is one of the most important factors affecting the resale value. If gold prices rise, the underlying value of your gold jewellery may also increase.

2. Gold Purity

Gold jewellery is available in different purities. Common examples include 24K, 22K, 18K and 14K. Higher-purity gold contains a greater proportion of pure gold and therefore generally has a higher value per gram.

3. Net Gold Weight

Jewellery can contain stones, diamonds, beads or other materials. Therefore, gross jewellery weight may not be the same as the actual gold weight. The non-gold portion may be deducted before calculating the gold value.

4. Jeweller’s Deduction

Different jewellers may have different buyback policies. A buyer may apply a deduction or offer a price below the theoretical metal value. Always ask for the exact buyback rate and deductions before selling.

5. Making Charges

Making charges paid when the jewellery was originally purchased are generally not treated as gold metal value during resale. This is one reason the resale amount can be significantly different from the original amount paid for the jewellery.

Gold Resale Value Example

Suppose you own 20 grams of 22K gold jewellery and 2 grams of the total weight consists of stones or other non-gold material. Your net gold weight would be 18 grams.

If the 24K gold rate is ₹15,000 per gram, the approximate 22K rate based on 91.6% purity would be calculated using the purity factor. The resulting gold value can then be reduced by the applicable jeweller deduction to estimate the resale value.

Does Gold Jewellery Lose Value When Resold?

Gold itself does not automatically lose its market value simply because it has been previously owned. However, the amount received when selling jewellery can be lower than the original purchase price because the original bill may include making charges, taxes, design charges and other costs that are not recovered in the same way during resale.

  • Keep your original purchase invoice if available.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is gold resale value calculated?
Gold resale value is generally estimated using the net gold weight, gold purity and current gold rate, followed by any applicable buyer deduction. The exact amount depends on the buyer’s policy and the quality and purity verification of the jewellery.
Do I get making charges back when selling gold jewellery?
Making charges are generally not recovered as part of the gold’s metal value when jewellery is resold. The actual buyback policy can differ between jewellers, so check the terms before selling.
Is 22K gold worth more than 18K gold?
Per gram, 22K gold generally has a higher gold content than 18K gold. Therefore, assuming the same weight and market conditions, 22K jewellery generally has a higher underlying gold value.
Are stones included in the gold resale calculation?
Stones, diamonds and other non-gold components should generally be separated from the gold weight when estimating the metal value. Different jewellers may use different methods for valuing stones.
Can I calculate profit or loss on my gold jewellery?
Yes. Enter your original purchase price in the calculator. It will compare the estimated resale value with your purchase price and show the approximate difference and percentage.
Is this Gold Resale Value Calculator accurate?
The calculator provides an estimate based on the information entered. The final amount offered by a jeweller can differ because of purity testing, deductions, buyback policies, stone valuation and the actual market rate used by the buyer.
